Smashed cans made of porcelain in the ancient Ming Dynasty’s style by Lei Xue

Lei Xue, a Chinese artist, has ingeniously blended the ancient with the modern in his series of porcelain sculptures that mimic smashed aluminum cans. These pieces, crafted to resemble discarded, crumpled cans, are made from white porcelain and adorned with blue patterns and motifs reminiscent of Ming Dynasty wares. Xue’s work puts a contemporary twist on traditional ceramics, creating a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on consumer culture and historical artistry.

The sculptures serve as a bridge across centuries, connecting the opulence and skilled craftsmanship of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) with today’s throwaway society. The juxtaposition of the can’s modern form with the ancient style of decoration invites reflection on the contrasts between past and present, permanence and impermanence, value and disposability.
