Exploring the intersection of clay, wax, and humanity in Milica Krstić’s intriguing sculptures

In the intriguing realm of mixed media art, Milica Krstić, an innovative Serbian creator, merges the tactile essence of ceramics with the enigmatic allure of wax. Her delicate sculptures, elegantly blending tiny faces, bodies, and enchanting symbols, become profound narrations of the human journey. Despite initially gravitating toward the digital world of graphic design, Krstić discovered her true passion for the tangible touch of clay in a serendipitous encounter with sculpture. Her works, crafted from a combination of clay, wax, and wood, are not merely aesthetic entities but profound commentaries on human potential and belief. The tactile nature of her pieces, suspended in time through the ethereal coating of wax, invites us to contemplate the manifold achievements and convictions of humankind.

Krstić’s celebrated series commences with “Alpha”, a meticulously constructed depiction involving 400 male faces, each dipped in serene white wax and harmoniously arranged on a wooden circle. This piece exudes a poignant reflection on individual uniqueness amidst a collective identity. “Beta,” the sequel, comprises around 150 human figures immortalized in dynamic poses and submerged in a calming green wax, symbolizing the vitality and evolution of the human spirit. The series concludes with “Gama”, which features a tapestry of around 200 symbols coated in an evocative black wax, serving as cryptic reminders of the diverse narratives and ideologies that propel human existence. Through her immersive art, Krstić not only bridges but elevates the conversation between the tangible and the metaphorical, inviting a deeper exploration into what defines humanity.

I have a graphic design degree but I wanted to do something with my hands, not with a computer. So three years ago I went to a studio and thought they were doing pottery, but actually, it was only sculptured they made. I gave it a try and immediately fell in love with it. This is my first series of works made from clay, wax, and wood. They represent a body of a man and all he can achieve with it and what he believes in. “Alpha” is my first sculpture that I worked on for five months. It consists of 400 male faces made of clay, dipped in white wax on a wooden circle. “Beta” is the second. Consists of about 150 human bodies in various poses, dipped in green wax. “Gama” is the third and consists about 200 symbols, dipped in black wax.
