The natural world brims with inspiration, and artist Kaori Kurihara translates that inspiration into fantastical creations. Her ceramic sculptures are captivating journeys into the realm of the extraordinary, where familiar forms morph into otherworldly delights.
Kurihara’s artistic process involves drawing upon the essence of real fruits and flowers. She meticulously observes their shapes, textures, and colors, and then imbues them with a touch of whimsy. The resulting sculptures are both strangely familiar and utterly unique. We recognize hints of strawberries, pomegranates, and blossoming flowers, yet these forms are twisted, elongated, or adorned with fantastical details that transport us to a dreamlike realm.
Kurihara’s sculptures are a captivating exploration of the intersection between reality and imagination. They invite us to ponder the boundless potential of the natural world and the beauty that arises when we allow our creativity to take root.
I am inspired by the plant world by paying particular attention to shapes and their geometric repetition. Every element of nature seems to repeat itself but in fact there is an infinite diversity of it. Then I have a deep desire to make concrete the fruits represented in my mind and to be able to contemplate them through my own eyes. It is in this idea that I try to create pieces that are both realistic and dreamlike.
