William Kidd, an innovative ceramicist, has been captivating the art world with his vibrant and textural sculptures of imagined tropical fruits and vegetables. His work is a creative exploration of organic possibilities, drawing inspiration from the natural world to form life forms that might exist in an otherworldly place. Kidd’s sculptures are not imitations but rather fantastical creations that could belong to a mystical ecosystem, reflecting his deep observation of microorganisms, fungi, seeds, cacti, and sea life.
Using a combination of wheel throwing and hand building, Kidd has been perfecting his craft for over 25 years. His choice of low-fire red earthenware, finished with oxide stains, underglazes, and a signature crawl glaze, gives his pieces a particularly organic appearance. The brightly colored and richly textured sculptures, complete with spikes and bulges, seem to undergo a metamorphosis, inviting viewers to ponder the beauty and diversity of nature’s forms.
Inspired by the beauty found in the natural world, my work is not an imitation of any real living thing, but rather life forms that might exist in some otherworldly place. Microorganisms, fungi, seeds, cacti, and sea life have been observed in great detail which have inspired me to create these ‘organic possibilities’.
