Dinosaurs roam a post-apocalyptic landscape in Michael Kerbow’s ‘Late Capitalism’ series

In his thought-provoking series “Late Capitalism”, San Francisco-based artist Michael Kerbow envisions a dystopian future where dinosaurs reclaim a world ravaged by hyper-consumerism and environmental neglect. These creatures roam desolate landscapes, from decaying gas stations to crumbling highways, symbolizing the resurgence of nature amidst the collapse of human-made structures. Kerbow’s work serves as a stark allegory for the consequences of unchecked capitalism and its impact on the environment.

Each painting is meticulously detailed, incorporating familiar corporate symbols and advertisements to underscore the pervasive reach of consumer culture. For instance, in “Vestige (Golden Arches)”, Dimetrodons explore the area outside an abandoned McDonald’s restaurant, highlighting the remnants of a once-dominant fast-food empire. Subtle yet telling signs of climate catastrophe, such as volcanic eruptions and flooded terrains, permeate the backgrounds, emphasizing the environmental degradation that parallels economic decline.

Kerbow’s intention is to blend humor with a sobering message, making his art approachable while provoking critical reflection on current societal trajectories. He expresses concern over the fragility of our ecosystem, stating, “We like to believe everything we currently have will always be there for us, but I suspect it could just as easily fall apart and slip away”. Through “Late Capitalism”, he challenges us to reconsider our relationship with consumption and its long-term effects on the planet.
