Frog and Toad is a lovely knitting pattern series crafted by New York-based artist Kristina McGowan, inspired by the homonym 1970s classic children’s book series. Written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel, each book contains five simple, often humorous, sometimes poignant, short stories chronicling the exploits of the anthropomorphic frog and a toad. Some of their adventures include attempting to fly a kite, cleaning Toad’s dirty house instead of postponing the chores to the next day, and finding out different reasons for isolation*.
I’ve always loved the saying that “reading is dreaming with your eyes open,” and as a child, no book filled my dreamscape more vividly than Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad series. Tucked under our quilts, my parents would often read the books to my twin sister and me before bed and the sense of comfort and home they provided was immense.
