Mary Maka’s Year of the Snake illustrations: a playful artistic exploration

In celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, artist Mary Maka (previously featured) has unveiled a captivating series of illustrations dedicated to the Year of the Snake. Drawing inspiration from diverse forms and concepts, Maka’s work showcases serpents intertwined with botanical elements and imaginative designs. Her dynamic creatures writhe and twist, incorporating plant-like traits such as cacti spikes and flowers into their serpentine compositions.

Maka’s digital portraits capture various unexpected characteristics, from a fork-tongued green cat to a berry-tailed rattler. Through humorous depictions of serpents shaped like cats, fruit, desert flora, and creatures out of science fiction, Maka embraces new ideas and juxtapositions. Still in draft form, additional vipers try on the guises of a genie, cowboy, and others.

Through her playful and inventive approach, Maka reimagines the traditional symbol of the snake, infusing it with fresh perspectives and charm. Her illustrations not only honor the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year but also invite viewers to explore the multifaceted representations of the snake in art and mythology. By blending humor, creativity, and cultural symbolism, Maka’s work offers a delightful and thought-provoking visual experience.
