Reflective circle sculptures: merging art, nature, and sustainability in Martin Hill’s work

Martin Hill’s environmental art interventions captivate audiences with their reflective circle sculptures that seamlessly merge with nature. These installations, crafted from natural materials such as ice, stones, and leaves, are strategically placed in diverse landscapes to highlight the ethereal beauty inherent in the cycle of life and nature’s delicate balance. Hill’s intent is not merely to present art within nature, but to instigate a dialogue on sustainability and ecological awareness. The transient nature of these works underscores the ever-evolving relationship between the natural world and humanity. As the materials used in his sculptures degrade and return to the earth, they remind us of the impermanence of both art and life.

The reflective circles, often positioned to align perfectly with natural vistas, accentuate the symbiotic relationship between two worlds. Where some might see mere reflections, Hill’s art compels us to contemplate deeper on their connection with the environment. His artistry encourages an immersive experience that invites a pause — a moment to witness the fusion of earth and sky, and to ponder our role within this continuum. By incorporating the passage of time and change directly into his art, Hill not only symbolizes the cycles present in nature but also alludes to the necessity for circular economies and sustainable living. His work is a poignant nudge that stimulates both reflection and action toward preserving the planet.

Since 1992, in collaboration with Philippa Jones, I have focused my art practice on making and photographing environmental sculptures in nature that return to nature. My photographs are all that remain of the sculptures. They are exhibited, published, and collected worldwide. For me making this body of work is my way of connecting with nature to tell the story of the transition that is underway now towards a circular economy that emulates the way nature works.
