Clairy Laurence, a Brisbane-based ceramic artist, has dedicated over 35 years to mastering the art of sculpture and ceramics. Growing up in a family of potters and artists, she was immersed in creativity from a young age, which profoundly influenced her artistic journey. In the early 1990s, Clairy established Amfora Gallery in Brisbane, showcasing her work and that of fellow artists. By 2013, she transitioned to focusing exclusively on her ceramic art, developing her signature figurative sculptures known as ‘Lil’ Babes’ — delicate, nymph-like figures from an alternate reality she calls ‘The Other Place’.
Clairy’s creations are renowned for their ethereal quality, often depicting wide-eyed ladies adorned with petal crowns and expressive features that convey inquisitiveness, sass, or subtle mischief. Her work delves into themes of life, death, rebirth, and change, employing symbolic motifs and improvised forms reminiscent of natural shapes. The use of muted saccharine colors, high gloss dark tones, and rich lusters amplifies the contrasts between good and evil, life and death, in her pieces. Each sculpture is unique, combining hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to bring her imaginative characters to life.
Beyond her personal practice, Clairy contributes to the artistic community by teaching workshops in her home studio, nestled amidst Brisbane’s bushland. In 2024, she opened Field Trip Gallery in Paddington, providing a platform for both emerging and established artists to exhibit their work. Her sculptures have been featured in various galleries across South East Queensland, including Paper Boat Press, Graydon Gallery, and Artisan. Through her art and community involvement, Clairy Laurence continues to inspire and captivate audiences with her whimsical and thought-provoking ceramic sculptures.
