Hui Ancient Villages: capturing the timeless beauty of Ming and Qing architecture with Florian Delalée

Florian Delalée’s photography series transports us to the enchanting Huizhou Region, where elegance from the past merges seamlessly with natural beauty. Delalée’s work encapsulates the spirit of ancient China, immortalizing the architectural grandeur of the Ming and Qing dynasties nestled amidst lush landscapes. His lens delicately captures the mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow on the whitewashed houses of Xidi and Hongcun, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These villages, with their beautifully preserved structures, echo tales from centuries ago, standing as breathtaking monuments to bygone eras. As we gaze upon his images, the connection between cultural heritage and nature is vividly depicted, making history feel timeless.

Beyond the well-known villages of Xidi and Hongcun, Delalée’s journey through Huizhou also guides us to less explored but equally captivating locales. Shexian County, for instance, reveals Yangchan Village, which clings to a mountainside, creating an awe-inspiring vista of earth-toned dwellings that blend harmoniously with their surroundings. Delalée’s artistry paints a picture of rural idylls where nature and architecture exist in serene balance. Each image serves as a portal to the past, where the rustic charm of these ancient structures is juxtaposed with the vibrant hues of the verdant countryside, showcasing the profound beauty of heritage landscapes that continue to inspire with their enduring allure.

The region called “Huizhou” is home to several ancient architecture wonder from Ming and Qing Dynasty, which includes villages of Xidi and Hongcun that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There is plenty of villages scattered about the verdant countryside and contrasting with white houses. Another landscape can be found in Shexian county in Anhui province, Yangchan village is built on the mountainside and is famous for its earthen building
