Bolt Poetry is a series of sculptures by Tobbe Malm, a blacksmith and photographer based in Oslo, Norway. The sculptures are made from old steel bolts that Malm found in a barn in Sweden. He heated, forged, bent, and twisted the bolts into expressive shapes that resemble human figures. The sculptures convey various emotions and situations, such as love, sorrow, pain, warmth, and humor. Malm calls his work Bolt Poetry because he believes that the bolts have stories to tell. He says, “I tried to create relations, meetings, and situations and suddenly stories emerged about sorrow, joy, pain, warmth, and humor. A kind of poetry was created, hence the title.”
Bolt Poetry is a remarkable example of how a simple material can be transformed into a powerful artistic expression. Malm uses his skills as a blacksmith and his imagination as an artist to give life and personality to the rusty bolts. His sculptures are both realistic and abstract, inviting the viewers to interpret their own meanings and emotions. Bolt Poetry is a testament to Malm’s creativity and craftsmanship, as well as his ability to evoke surprisingly human forms from single steel bolts.
