Exploring ‘A Floating World’: cats embodying Japanese artistic traditions by Tung Nam

Vietnamese illustrator Tung Nam masterfully blends feline charm with the elegance of ukiyo-e art in his series “A Floating World”. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese woodblock prints, Nam’s illustrations feature cats adorned in patterned kimonos, surrounded by elements like flowers, waves, and clouds. This fusion creates a serene atmosphere that captures the essence of both feline grace and classical art forms.

The series began as practice sketches of flowers in the ukiyo-e style, but Nâm felt something was missing. By introducing cats as protagonists and pairing them with companions such as fish, butterflies, and dragonflies, he added depth and narrative to each piece. This approach highlights the diverse personalities of cats, from playful curiosity to tranquil contemplation, set against harmonious natural backdrops.

“A Floating World” not only pays homage to the rich heritage of ukiyo-e but also offers a contemporary twist by featuring anthropomorphized felines. Nâm’s work invites art enthusiasts to explore a whimsical realm where tradition meets modernity, and where the timeless allure of cats is celebrated through the lens of classic Japanese aesthetics.
