From sugar to storytelling: the playful and conceptual depth of Simone Post’s ‘Sweet Memories’

Simone Post’s “Sweet Memories” transforms ordinary confectionery into an immersive artistic experience, where candy becomes both a playful material and a poignant symbol of nostalgia. This large-scale installation recreates the essence of childhood through a whimsical environment crafted from over 700 kilograms of sweets. With marshmallow furniture, pink-and-yellow candied bacon strips woven into bunk beds, and intricate sugar-coated surfaces, the work explores the relationship between memory, comfort, and the passage of time. The balance between indulgence and impermanence is at the heart of the piece, reflecting the fleeting nature of childhood joy.

Beyond its visual appeal, “Sweet Memories” delves into material experimentation, turning an ephemeral, everyday substance into a striking artistic statement. The installation plays with texture and form, repurposing candy in unexpected ways to challenge perceptions of both art and materiality. Every element, from carefully arranged confections to the contrast between structured designs and the organic nature of melting sugar, contributes to an experience that is both sensory and conceptual. The project invites reflection on how ordinary materials can be transformed into something extraordinary, layering deeper meaning beneath its playful aesthetic.

This work highlights an ongoing exploration of unconventional artistic approaches, where material choice becomes integral to storytelling. By shaping an entire environment from candy, “Sweet Memories” evokes both personal and collective recollections, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. The vibrant, detailed craftsmanship of the installation transforms sugary treats into something far more enduring — an exploration of time, memory, and the sweetness of fleeting moments. Simone Post’s “Sweet Memories” will be on display at Museum Voorlinden in the Netherlands, opening on April 5, 2025.
