Everyday objects submerged in the Dead Sea transform into amazing salt sculptures, by Sigalit Landau

Sigalit Landau is an Israeli artist born in Jerusalem. Since her childhood, she has had a special relationship of reverence for the Dead Sea. What ended up influencing a lot in the creative process of many of her works, as in the use of salt as raw material as mystically.

Her works are, at the same time, photographic series and sculptures. Landau submerges everyday objects, such as dresses, shoes, baskets, and even animal skulls in the hyper-salty waters of the Dead Sea and returns several times to photograph their salinization process, keeping up with the gradual crystallization of the salt in their structures and weaves. The result is stunning sculptures covered with the purest gleaming salt and many photographs series. The entire process can take up to two years.

These objects leave ‘the game’ of being useful ‘things’ and enter a new realm – the open space of representation. They loose their old features and dimensions and inhale a certain pureness of spirit, treated by climate and enhanced by emotion.
