John Lopez isn’t your average sculptor. Instead of wielding chisels and hammers against gleaming blocks of marble, Lopez breathes life into discarded scraps of metal. With a welder’s torch as his paintbrush and a junkyard as his palette, he transforms the cast-offs of industry into awe-inspiring works of art.
Lopez’s passion for his craft is evident in every piece. He draws inspiration from the vast landscapes and iconic figures of the American Midwest, bringing to life everything from stoic cowboys to thundering bison. Each sculpture is a testament to Lopez’s skill and ingenuity, as he coaxes unique textures and forms from the very materials that were once destined for the scrap heap.
The result is a collection of sculptures that are both powerful and poetic. Lopez’s work challenges us to see the beauty in the unexpected, reminding us that even the most ordinary objects can be transformed into something extraordinary.
My favorite part about these pieces is the texture. I just start grabbin’ stuff from the pile and welding it, in and if you weld enough of the same thing on over and over it creates this really cool texture that I’ve never seen in these kinds of pieces before. And I think that’s what draws people in.
