Sean E. Avery’s artistry turns obsolete technology into stunning animal sculptures, giving old CDs a new lease on life. His unique approach to sustainable art involves meticulously cutting up CDs and using them to create intricate, organic-looking forms. Each piece is a labor of love, often taking weeks to complete as he glues the shards onto wire mesh frames, crafting them into vibrant representations of animals.
The reflective quality of the CDs gives each sculpture a mesmerizing, iridescent quality that captures the essence of the creatures he depicts. Avery’s work is not only a testament to his creativity and skill but also speaks to a broader message of recycling and repurposing materials that would otherwise contribute to waste.
My sculptures are all constructed with recycled materials – old CDs, computer hard drives, etc., so I classify my work as “sustainable art”. They’re a lot of fun to make, but they take an extremely long time to finish, so I don’t do a lot of them.
