Beyond her insect sculptures lies a narrative of ecological respect and creative rejuvenation. Wilson embraces papercraft as a means to fulfill her artistic yearnings while allowing her ever-active mind to find solace. Utilizing paper scraps from previous projects, she brings her fantastical visions to life without sacrificing sustainability. This practice resonates with her intention to honor nature without harm, aligning with her childhood fascination with insects collected from the forest floor. Through this intricate dance of paper and pencil, Wilson not only showcases her profound admiration for the natural world but also narrates a personal journey of discovering a meditative and sustainable art form. Her work invites onlookers to pause and appreciate the overlooked wonders of the natural world, encapsulating the delicate balance between humans and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit.
I draw and paint all day, which I love, but oftentimes in the evenings, I would draw for fun too, which is very draining. I was looking for a way to be creatively fulfilled while allowing my brain to rest. Plus I save all my paper scraps from old jobs, which is what I use for my realistic sculptures of insects. And that’s how it began! My insect sculptures came about for a couple of different reasons. The primary being my love of real insects. I have always loved them and collected ones that I found already dead, but I was looking for a way to collect amazing insects without harming them. The other reason I found my way into creating these realistic artworks in my spare time is my full-time job as an illustrator.
