Richard Haining is an Atlanta-born furniture and decorative object designer who loves to create his pieces from sustainable raw materials. Haining draws inspiration from organic, geometric, and abstract forms to shape his unique and elegant creations.
Richard is a full-time maker committed to meticulously hand-crafted sustainable designs. Raised in Atlanta GA, Richard took a meandering path leading him to the Furniture Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. It was during this formal training where he learned to design and create with a sense of responsibility for the materials he chose to use, including where they came from, how they were sourced, as well as the inevitable “waste” created while making something new. In lieu of working with virgin timber fresh from a lumberyard, he chooses to work with wood salvaged from around his home in Brooklyn NY. These materials are found in all sorts of conditions, and thusly require quite a bit of time to process into something consistent and usable. The features he uncovers are wholly unique; water and mineral stains, contrasting heartwood and sapwood, knots, century-old nail and beetle holes. These “defects” are part of that lumber’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed. There is no board, no burl, no figure, nor tree that will ever match the random mosaic quality Richard’s STACKED creations possess, it cannot be found in nature.Richard Haining
