Malda Mohamed is a self-taught Maldivian artist who has taken the art world by storm with her captivating oil paintings. Unlike many artists who choose landscapes or still life as their subjects, Mohamed focuses on a single, powerful feature: the eye. Inspired by the belief that the eyes are “the window to a soul”, she strives to capture the vast spectrum of human emotions through her art.
Mohamed’s paintings are not merely portraits of eyes; they are portals into the inner world of her subjects. Through her skillful use of color, light, and brushstrokes, she breathes life into her creations. A single glance at one of her paintings can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and serenity to sorrow and despair. The viewer is drawn into the depths of the eye, compelled to unravel the story that lies behind it.
I felt inspired by painting the eyes as I’m a firm believer that the eyes are the only part of one’s being that can truly depict a person’s vulnerability. (…) I felt inspired to paint just the eye because an expression can be interpreted [in] a thousand different ways. (…) While I do give them names such as lust & desire, there are people that see it as something more, as a completely different emotion. It excites me to paint them, as I try to make them as raw as possible, to give it depth and life as I won’t be creating the same eye twice.
