Vera van Wolferen is a Dutch artist who creates miniature sculptures from balsa wood, inspired by architecture, nature, and stories. She calls her sculptures “Story Objects” because they are meant to evoke the imagination of the viewer and suggest a narrative behind the scenes. Her sculptures are often made of simple geometric shapes, such as cubes, cylinders, and cones, that are arranged in whimsical and playful ways. She uses balsa wood for its lightness, flexibility, and natural texture, and sometimes adds other materials like cotton, paper, or metal to enhance the details.
Some of her sculptures are static, while others are animated or interactive. She often displays her static sculptures under glass bell jars, creating a sense of isolation and wonder. Her animated sculptures are usually part of larger installations or video projects, where she uses stop-motion techniques to bring them to life. Her interactive sculptures invite the viewer to touch, move, or explore them, creating a dynamic and engaging experience. She is currently based in The Hague, Netherlands.
