Emerald etchings: Aleksei Boiko’s photos of Indonesian rice fields and terraces capture “The Art of Growing Food”

Aleksei Boiko, a Ukrainian landscape and travel photographer with an eye for captivating detail, has turned his lens toward the rice fields of Indonesia. The resulting photographs in his series “The Art of Growing Food” transcend mere documentation, transforming the process of rice cultivation into a visual symphony.

Boiko’s photos capture the intricate choreography of rice farming, from the emerald green nurseries where seedlings take root to the golden expanse of mature paddies swaying gently in the breeze. We see farmers meticulously tending to their crops, their figures dwarfed by the vastness of the fields. The play of light and shadow on the water creates a mesmerizing effect, transforming the paddies into shimmering mirrors reflecting the sky.

Beyond their beauty, Boiko’s photographs offer a glimpse into the backbreaking labor and meticulous care that goes into producing this essential grain. They pay homage to the deep connection between people and the land, a connection that has sustained civilizations for millennia.

Rice cultivation. Increasing the need for food, we conquer all the large territories of our planet. Sometimes you have to grow in areas that are poorly suited for cultivation. Hills, canyons – extremely inconvenient places. Nature is chaotic. Rice fields and terraces are a symbiosis of human labor and nature. We have to repeat the surface by planting everything with the same crop. This creates the most bizarre shapes and patterns.
