WanJin Gim, a Seoul-based artist, has garnered attention for his expressive anatomical drawings that capture the intricate details and beauty of the human body. Utilizing a vibrant palette of colored pencils, Gim’s work is characterized by its dynamic energy and delicate gestures, reflecting a deep interest in conveying the warmth and essence of human form.
His unique approach often involves layering colors to achieve a desired hue, embracing the imperfections that arise from this technique to enhance the visual impact of his art. Gim’s dedication to exploring the relationship between color and energy, or Qi, is evident in each piece, where the viewer can sense the body temperature and even the scent of the skin through the vivid and meticulous illustrations.
I’m interested in expressing body temperature and skin smell and am studying the relationship between color and energy (Qi) for my work… Currently, I usually use oil pastel and colored pencils. They both have limited colors, so I need to overlap them to produce a color that I like. Even if I can’t express the color that I intend to make, I am satisfied with the exceptional effect coming from the imperfectness.
