Erik Speer, also known as ESSPEER, is an American textile artist who combines his expertise in marine biology and fashion design to create intricate macrame art that captures the essence of coral reefs. His work is a testament to the beauty and complexity of marine ecosystems, meticulously crafted to reflect the diverse structures and vibrant life found within coral reefs. Speer’s commitment to sustainability is evident in his choice of materials, favoring natural fibers like wool, silk, and linen, and often incorporating recycled elements to minimize environmental impact.
His techniques are varied and innovative, including knotting, knitting, crocheting, braiding, and weaving, pushing the boundaries of textile art. Speer’s creations are not only visually stunning but also carry an important message about the preservation of our oceans and the delicate balance of life they harbor.
Most all of my materials are of natural origin, with wools, silks and linen being my favorites. I strive to use recycled fibers and yarns along with dead / overstock / waste material. My main methods of construction include knotting, knitting, crocheting, braiding, and weaving, but I constantly try to push the boundary of what is possible with my media.
