Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama wields his laser cutter, affectionately named Elsie, to create intricate and stunning relief sculptures from thin layers of plywood. These large-scale pieces blend the worlds of illustration, graphic design, and sculpture, resulting in captivating works that mesmerize viewers. Inspired by the human figure, architecture, and swirling mandalas, Schama’s designs feature geometric shapes and flourishes in harmonious tones.
His artistry invites us to explore abstracted imagery from multiple viewpoints, revealing hidden details and patterns. Since our last glimpse of his work in 2016, Schama has continued to experiment with color, incorporating one-color accents or technicolor arrays that resemble stained glass. In some of his latest pieces, he even cloaks entire designs in white paint, transforming them into sleek, ghost-like compositions.
