Vegetal Gradient: the harmony of color and form in Sonia Poli’s gradient paper-cut sculpture

Sonia Poli’s series, Vegetal Gradient, reimagines the intersection of nature and artistry with her vibrant 3D paper-cut sculptures. Based in Lille, France, this talented graphic designer and illustrator transforms wooden embroidery frames and high-quality materials such as watercolor paper and gouache into intricate forest-themed works of art. Employing a subtle gradient technique, Poli carefully transitions from navy blue to lighter, brighter hues, mirroring the gentle shifts seen in natural light. Her method enables her paper creations to transcend traditional two-dimensional boundaries, transforming them into captivating, immersive sculptures. The use of gold and white Indian ink adds an ethereal touch, highlighting the delicate details within each piece and inspiring audiences to explore the layers of complexity within her work.

By focusing on leaves, a subject close to her heart, Poli encapsulates the timeless beauty and diverse patterns found in nature. Her work pushes the boundaries of conventional collage art, aiming to evoke a sense of wonder and discovery. Poli’s background in graphic design is evident in her meticulous attention to detail and dynamic use of color, presenting a harmonious blend of creativity and precision. Through Vegetal Gradient, she delves into the symbiotic relationship between art and nature, capturing the fleeting essence of botanical life in a series of stunning, tactile sculptures. This collection not only exemplifies her creativity but also deepens our appreciation for the aesthetic and emotional impact of nature-inspired art.

While following my path through the paper collage world and I simply came up with this. Tired of frames, I wanted my collage to act more like a sculpture. After playing around with fish for my previous exhibition, I used the same technique (gradiant from navy blue to a lighter / brighter colour) for another favorite thing of mine, leaves.
