Julie Light is a London, UK-based artist specializing in making sculptural objects in glass. She takes inspiration from the human body and the forms of other creatures.
Julie Light’s creative practice focuses on body and form, whether human or creature, often in terms of health and disease. She explores how people imagine themselves internally or at a microscopic level, leading to unconventional portrayals of the body. She also investigates hybridity, especially where the animate and the inanimate come together. Her hypothesis is that alternative ways of understanding our physical being can influence our day-to-day sense of embodiment and identity. She also believes that engaging with physical objects facilitates radically different ideas and conversations to solely viewing images (whether analogue or digital), an idea borne out by recent neuroscience research. She works in glass, with metal and other materials, primarily making sculptural objects. Her focus is on the physical or visceral as well as the communicative qualities of the artwork and her aim is to make pieces that people want to touch as well as to look at and think about.
