In the realm of contemporary art, Dan Lam’s sculptures stand as a testament to the boundless creativity of the human spirit. Her work, a vibrant collection of drips, blobs, and squishes, transcends the ordinary, inviting viewers into a world where color and form collide in an explosion of visual delight. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each piece is a unique blend of polyurethane foam, acrylic, and resin, shaped by Lam’s imaginative vision. Drawing inspiration from nature, food, and the human body, Lam’s sculptures are not confined to a single narrative but rather evoke a spectrum of emotions, from attraction to repulsion, leaving a lasting impression on the beholder.
Lam’s artistic process is a dance between the deliberate and the spontaneous, a balance of careful planning and the joy of experimentation. The result is a body of work that is both otherworldly and intimately familiar, challenging our perceptions of beauty and artistry. As these multi-colored creations capture the light and the eyes of onlookers, they serve as a reminder of the transformative power of art, and of the endless possibilities that lie within the medium of sculpture.
I take cues from nature, food, and the human body. By not directly referencing one thing in particular, I try to create something that addresses both attraction and repulsion, making objects that exist in between. Those ideas drive the work and generate new pieces, but I think process and play informs what I make just as much.
