kNOTs: armor-like textile sculptures made of thousands of knots by Sandra de Groot

Sandra de Groot, a Dutch artist and founder of Atelier CHAOS, has created a series of intricate, armor-like textile sculptures using thousands of knots. These sculptures, titled kNOTs, are crafted using the traditional Turkish technique of macramé, which involves knotting by hand. Each piece is a testament to the artist’s skill and dedication, as it requires a significant amount of time and effort to create. The kNOTs installations aim to raise questions about time, technique, intensiveness, and intensity, creating a dialogue between the object, the viewer, and the maker.

De Groot’s work is not only visually striking but also thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to contemplate the process and meaning behind the intricate designs. The use of knots as a medium adds an extra layer of depth, as it can be seen as a symbol of connection and bonding. The artist’s goal is to heighten awareness by presenting large quantities of knots and ropes, which raises questions about the value and significance of these elements in our lives.
