Roland Kramer, a Munich-based photographer and visual artist, harnesses the natural ebb and flow of the Atlantic Ocean in his striking photographic series. Situated in the scenic realms of Moliets-et-Maa on France’s west coast, Krämer uses long-exposure techniques to transform the dynamic relationship between the lake ‘Courant d’Huchet’ and the ocean into captivating visual narratives. Each image renders the rhythmic pulse of the tides with an ethereal quality, capturing the serene transition as water sweeps toward the shore during high tide and retreats to the ocean during low tide. The resulting images evoke a sense of awe, reminiscent of liquid paintings that whisper the tale of water’s relentless journey.
Set against sunsets casting their colors across the horizon, Krämer’s work is a profound exploration of nature’s artistry. The estuary, where the lake meets the ocean, becomes an enigmatic sanctuary, where the water’s motion is captured in a dance of tranquility and power. Krämer’s photographs challenge the perception of liquid motion, freezing fluidity into a mesmerizing stillness that speaks of the force and grace of the natural world. By extending his lens into the deeper narrative of this silent dance, Krämer allows us to witness the harmony of natural forces converging, rendering a spectacle that is both a meditation and a celebration of the ocean’s timeless allure
In ‘Moliets-et-Maa’ on the west coast of France the lake ‘Courant d’Huchet’ flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Every day a spectacle is unfolding when water is rapidly moving towards the coast during high tide or is being dragged out into the ocean during low tide. The liberated power of the tides. This almost static movement of the water at the estuary, where lake and ocean meet, caught my attention. I started observing & documenting the flow of water moving from the lake out into the ocean during sunset. Through the use of a slow shutter, visually perceived standing waves were turned into dark liquid paintings.
