Taking inspiration from Christian sacred arts and surrealism, Porto Rico-born artist Cristina Córdova creates fascinating ceramic sculptures that invoke a sense of magical realism.
Córdova grew up in Puerto Rico where she was immersed in representations of Catholicism; this imagery later influenced her work, which features figures holding poses that echo those of saints, goddesses or mythical creatures. Some of her sculpture incorporates found material from Puerto Rico — metal or wood pieces. Her ceramics echo this found aesthetic, her finishes mimicking decay, rust, or shells — a patina of aging relics.
