When we think of sculptures, materials like marble and bronze often come to mind. However, London-based artist Olivier Bertrand takes a more unconventional approach by crafting realistic animal sculptures entirely from upcycled cardboard. His unique creations capture the raw emotions and intricate details of various creatures, all while promoting sustainability and zero waste.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bertrand turned to cardboard as his medium of choice. The accessibility and versatility of this material allowed him to experiment freely, resulting in lifelike animal forms that evoke wonder and admiration. From majestic lions to gentle elephants, Bertrand’s sculptures showcase the breadth of animal diversity. He draws inspiration from his travels through different continents, including Asia, Africa, and South America. To mimic the appearance of fur, Bertrand manipulates the cardboard into various shapes and textures. Once the basic form is complete, he adds the finishing touches with paint, resulting in stunningly detailed and expressive sculptures.
