Leegan Koo, a South Korean artist based in the United States, masterfully blends the bizarre and dark with pop and urban elements to create surreal paintings that evoke a mysterious, melancholic, and absurd atmosphere. Born in Seoul, Korea, Leegan’s artistic journey began at a young age, fueled by his self-taught drawing and painting skills. Growing up in various metropolitan cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City, he was immersed in cultural diversity and the dynamic energy of urban life, which became a profound source of inspiration. Jazz, hip-hop, and graffiti further enriched his artistic vision.
In 2011, Leegan shifted his focus to cityscape paintings, using his art as a visual diary to capture the memories and emotions associated with specific places. He experimented with various styles of realism and surrealism, honing his craft and developing a unique artistic language. In 2013, he moved to San Francisco to attend the Academy of Art University, where he received formal art education. Following his studies, Leegan relocated to Los Angeles in 2014 and embarked on his freelance artist career, working part-time for art companies that specialized in producing and printing artworks for clients such as Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Z Gallery. Today, Leegan continues to create his surreal masterpieces from his studio in Bellingham, Washington.
