Queer Africa 2: how Danielle Clough’s embroidered portraits weave stories of African queer life

Danielle Clough’s vibrant artistic expression breathes new life into the representation of African identities with her series, Queer Africa 2. Employing needle and thread, Clough transforms portraits into vivid embroidered masterpieces, capturing the essence of the individuals featured in these images. The original photographs, intended for use on the cover of an anthology, are reimagined through intricate stitching, reflecting not only the diversity of the subjects but also the rich tapestry of human emotion and interconnectedness. Clough’s dedication to this unique form of storytelling highlights her deep appreciation for both the art of embroidery and the powerful narratives embedded within queer experiences across Africa.

The anthology Queer Africa 2 serves as a poignant celebration of love and relationships within African queer communities. As each stitched portrait tells a story, the collection becomes a mosaic, showcasing the diversity and resilience found throughout the continent. This project, nominated for the esteemed Lambda Award, reinforces the vibrancy and dynamism found within African queer culture. Clough’s art not only beautifies but also amplifies the voices and stories that often go unheard, bridging gaps between visual art and literature. Through her work, Clough provides an exuberant and intimate lens into the layered experiences of love and identity that transcend borders, sparking dialogue and connection within and beyond the queer African community.

A series of miniature portraits embroidered from photos I have taken for the cover of the book Queer Africa 2. This project has such an amazing energy because how different each person has been, yet all all them are equally excited to be a part of the process. Queer Africa 2 is an anthology of stories about the many ways in which we love each other on the continent. Queer Africa 2 has been nominated for the prestigious Lambda Award.
