Patrick Cabral, a talented Filipino artist, has created a stunning paper art series titled “Dinagyang Mask”, which pays tribute to the dualities of life. Inspired by the vibrant Dinagyang Festival, Cabral’s intricate masks explore themes such as Heaven and Earth, Good and Evil, and Calm and Chaos. Each mask is meticulously crafted, featuring elements that symbolize different aspects of nature and human experience. For instance, the “Langit” mask, with its bird-like features and dominant blue hues, represents air, flight, and dreams, while the “Lupa” mask, with dragon-like features and fiery colors, embodies earth, fire, and passion.
Cabral’s work is a celebration of Filipino culture and the rich traditions of the Dinagyang Festival. By combining traditional paper-cutting techniques with contemporary design, he creates pieces that are both visually striking and deeply meaningful. His masks not only reflect the dualities present in nature and human life but also serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things. Through his art, Cabral invites viewers to contemplate the balance between opposing forces and the beauty that arises from their harmony.
These pieces were inspired by the Dinagyang Festival, with its usage of vibrant color and the overall intricate festiveness of the masks and costumes of the event. Each piece represent a certain ‘world’. Designated and representing ‘Langit’, the blue Dinagyang ‘warrior’ holds bird-like features. The dominant color is blue, which represents air, flight, horizons, and dreams, according to the artist. ‘Lupa’ on the other hand, has dragon-like features reminiscent of the Asian interpretation of the dragon, or Buwaya. The dominant colors are red and yellow, representing fire, earth, light, and passion. Both pieces combined explore the duality of Heaven and Earth, Good and Evil, Calm and Chaos. Cabral also meant these works to show how we, as human beings, merge the two in one for the celebration of faith, trade and worship.
