Nature’s echo: ceramic vases ornate with realistic bird sculptures by Sarah Conti

Sarah Conti, a skilled ceramic sculptor, creates stunning vases adorned with realistic bird sculptures. Her work is deeply influenced by themes of ecology, conservation, and social issues. By combining ceramic vases with lifelike bird sculptures, Conti’s pieces symbolize the delicate balance of nature and the impact of climate change on vulnerable species. Her art serves as a powerful commentary on the interconnectedness of environmental and social justice, urging viewers to reflect on their role in these global challenges.

Conti’s sculptures are not only visually captivating but also rich in meaning. Each piece tells a story, weaving together elements of art history, feminism, civil rights, and critiques of colonization and capitalism. Her birds, meticulously crafted from clay, act as both literal and metaphorical symbols, highlighting the wisdom and warnings they offer about our changing world. Through her art, Conti invites viewers to engage with pressing environmental and social issues in a profound and thought-provoking way.

In my sculpture practice I work to convey how climate justice is social justice. As a more sensitive species, birds are being killed far before humans by the unavoidable effects of climate change. Similarly, these environmental issues will first impact the most vulnerable humans; those who don’t have the ability or resources to escape impending natural disasters, despite often contributing to climate pollution the least. I am using birds literally to reference the dangers they face in the earth’s future. But I am also using birds metaphorically to discuss historic and contemporary social issues. Throughout my work I weave in themes of art history, feminism, civil rights, immigration, community, and critiques on colonization and capitalism. Birds are the only other species as globally ubiquitous as humans; they have wisdom and warnings to imbue if only we can listen.
