Magical realms in watercolor: CarrieAnn Truitt’s dragons radiate whimsy and wonder

CarrieAnn Truitt, a vibrant artist based in the Bronx, New York, enchants our imagination with her unique watercolor paintings of dragons. Her artwork blends whimsical fantasy with the tranquility of nature, portraying dragons intertwined with butterflies and other natural elements. For CarrieAnn, art is not just a creative outlet but also a therapeutic tool to help manage her daily life while living with schizophrenia. This imaginative merging of mythical creatures and nature is a showcase of her artistic vision and sensitivity, creating a nurturing escape into a world of fantasy where the surreal and real coexist harmoniously. Her choice of watercolor is deliberate, as it mirrors the aesthetic of classic scientific illustrations she admires, infusing her expressions with a nostalgic touch that captivates audiences.

CarrieAnn’s relationship with art is both passionate and liberating, characterized by infinite experimentation across mediums. Her journey began with reluctance, unsure of the prospects of showcasing her work to the world. However, with the steadfast encouragement of her husband, she embraced the daunting yet thrilling challenge of selling her art. Today, their pop-up gallery flourishes as a beacon of her talent, where admirers can immerse themselves in the fantastical realms she conjures. Each dragon tells a silent story — a reflection of CarrieAnn’s inner world — while carrying an undercurrent of joy and wonder that resonates with her audience. She aspires to compile her collection of dragons into a book, promising an enchanting glimpse into her vibrant universe. Through her art, she offers not just a visual treat but also a reminder of the therapeutic power of creativity.

I’m an artist who loves painting whimsical and fantastical things. I love making people smile. I have dabbled in every medium from oil paints to digital. I don’t feel like one should be constrained by medium — I enjoy experimenting with all of them. I’ll use whatever medium I feel best suits the project I am working on. Right now, it is dragons in watercolor. I chose watercolor because I wanted to capture the feeling of the old-fashioned scientific illustrations that I love. After I feel like I have made enough dragons, I plan on gathering the paintings into a book. Painting and drawing is something I have always done, but I never imagined that people would want to buy my art. My husband saw the potential for me to turn art into my job, and now he sells my artwork out of our little pop-up gallery. I have to admit, he had to drag me kicking and screaming into giving selling my art a chance, and I am glad he did.
