The hidden face of everything: discovering the poetic social criticism in Pejac’s murals

Pejac, originally a fine art painter, soon liberated his creativity from the confines of traditional canvas to the expansive realm of urban environments. His journey into mural art was sparked by a desire to challenge the conventional artistic narratives that he found stifling during his university days. By carrying his artistic expressions onto street walls, Pejac has crafted a unique dialogue with the public, bypassing the exclusive halls of museums to engage directly with the everyday passerby. His works serve as vibrant canvases for critical reflection, tackling themes from institutional complacency to social injustice. The walls become portals, flaunting their history, and subtly nudging spectators toward a broader awareness of the sometimes uncomfortable truths in their surroundings.

Marked by a virtuosic blend of humor and melancholy, Pejac’s murals invite a deeply reflective engagement with art—not through the mere appreciation of aesthetic bliss, but rather through a confrontation with the often neglected undercurrents of daily existence. With each stroke, Pejac crafts a poetic narrative that delves into the hidden aspects of life, piquing curiosity and sparking contemplation among those who encounter his work. For Pejac, art is a crucial mechanism to interrupt the inertia of adult life, compelling individuals to pause, ponder, and reconsider their perceptions and priorities. Through his satirical yet poignant imagery, he transcends the barriers of traditional art spaces, democratizing art and empowering individuals to see and think differently.

Both melancholy and humor are the locomotive of my works. They create a poetic language whose essence doesn’t rely on simple beauty, but on the hidden side of everything. (…) People’s reactions make me go on. Adult life is pure inertia, which seems to be broken only by bad news or incentives, and if I can make people think, it all makes sense.
