Uncovering the layers of Chifumi Krohom’s cultural fusion street art adventures

Chifumi Krohom has creatively navigated the realm of street art, amalgamating the vivacious spirit of pop culture with the profound depth of religious syncretism. Originating from the east of France, Krohom has immersed himself in Cambodian culture for the past few years. His work flourishes within this unique cultural tapestry, producing murals that are not only visually arresting but also steeped in symbolic resonance. Drawing on Khmer patterns from iconic sites like Angkor Wat and sacred pagodas in Phnom Penh, his vibrant creations can adorn anything from the walls of a forgotten building near the jungle to the upscale facades of chic restaurants in the bustling heart of the city. His murals become more than art; they are lively dialogues between past traditions and contemporary narratives, blending various cultural elements with an innovative twist.

This diverse background fuels Krohom’s artistic vision as he travels and creates across continents, leaving his mark in places like Nepal, Denmark, and his native France. Everywhere his art goes, it brings a lively fusion of divergent cultural motifs and reimagined historical intricacies. Krohom’s work evokes an appreciation of the playful yet complex nature of cultural interactions, where every mural tells a story beyond its vibrant strokes. His ability to transcend regional boundaries with a universal language of art emphasizes themes of unity, adaptability, and the dynamic nature of modern cultural expressions. Each piece acts as an individual tapestry, where global influences seamlessly intertwine with local heritage, provoking thought and wonder through their visual storytelling.

My name chifumi is inspired from the game “rock scisor paper”, as a vanishing point crossing symbolism, joke and syncretism. Originaly from Est of France, I have been living since 3 year in Cambodia. Trying to integrate the huge and deep cultural background from this country in my graphical work. Using some khmer paterns extracted from Angkor Wat temples, holly pagodas in Phnom Penh or event silk scarf found in a lost labyrinth of a local market. Sometimes my hands takes place on abandoned houses not so far from the jungle, sometimes on very chic restaurant of the busy capital: Phnom Penh. Some other have been made in my travels in Nepal, Danemark or France.
