Aspen Golann’s artistic practice centers on the inherent function of an object as her initial creative impetus. Working primarily by hand in her New Hampshire studio, she meticulously carves and sands a variety of wooden pieces, including furniture, spoons, and candlesticks, all imbued with a distinctively playful quality. The artist notes that understanding an object’s purpose often guides her creative process, suggesting elements like hand placement or anticipated movement. This approach allows her to craft pieces that are not only beautiful but also thoughtfully designed for their intended use.
With a background in traditional 17th to 19th-century British and American woodworking techniques, Golann possesses a deep awareness of the historical context surrounding colonial-style furniture and design. She grapples with the problematic origins of these aesthetics, acknowledging that their beauty cannot be separated from the racism, classism, and misogyny prevalent during their creation. Instead of discarding this visual language entirely, Golann chooses to recontextualize it, transforming traditional forms into more vibrant and spirited objects. She masterfully incorporates techniques such as inlays and laminations into smaller works, humorously blending the elevated status often associated with fine furniture with everyday domestic items predominantly used by women.
Beyond her personal creative endeavors, Golann dedicates herself to The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, a nonprofit organization providing free training and supplies to aspiring woodworkers. This initiative also includes a program designed to support innovative toolmakers, reflecting her commitment to fostering new talent and advancing the craft. She describes this undertaking as an intensely rewarding and vital project. Currently, Golann shares her expertise as a faculty member in the furniture department at the Rhode Island School of Design, and she frequently conducts workshops and classes, further contributing to the woodworking community.
