Connecting continents and celestial wonders: the annual Milky Way photography competition unites global talent

The cosmos annually unites photographers across the globe through the captivating Milky Way Photographer of the Year contest. This esteemed competition celebrates the awe-inspiring beauty of our galaxy, as seen from countless perspectives on Earth and, remarkably, even from beyond. Each year, thousands of submissions pour in, showcasing the diverse ways in which individuals capture the shimmering band of stars and cosmic dust that graces our night sky.

Now in its eighth year, the contest, organized by Capture the Atlas, recently saw over 6,000 entries vying for recognition. The winning images transport one to vastly different corners of the world, from the ancient stone figures of Easter Island to the lofty peaks of Taiwan’s Hehuan Mountain and the remote, unique landscapes of Yemen’s Socotra Island. A truly groundbreaking addition to this year’s collection features a mesmerizing capture of the Milky Way from the International Space Station, a testament to the expanding reach of astrophotography.

Despite the varied locales, techniques, and approaches employed by the photographers, a unifying thread runs through all the celebrated works: the magnificent brilliance of the Milky Way itself. This extraordinary celestial phenomenon serves as a powerful connector, inspiring a global community of artists to look skyward and share their unique interpretations of its grandeur. All 25 winning photographs are available for discovery on the Capture the Atlas platform.
