Imagine strolling through the enchanting canals of Venice and encountering historical figures brought to life before your eyes. This wasn’t a scene from a dream, but the captivating “Anime di Venezia – Souls of Venice” exhibition by Italian-American artist Lorenzo Quinn. Held from April to September 2024, this innovative project marked a unique departure from Quinn’s usual style. While his sculptures are renowned for their evocative portrayal of human connection, “Souls of Venice” took things a step further using augmented reality (AR).
The exhibition showcased 15 statues, each crafted from a mesmerizing metallic mesh. These sculptures, representing iconic Venetian figures, served as anchors for the AR experience. Visitors downloaded a dedicated app, transforming their smartphones into portals revealing animated figures interacting with the physical sculptures. This immersive blend of the past and present allowed viewers to not only admire the artistry but also connect with the very essence of Venice’s rich history.
Commemorating the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death and coinciding with the 60th Venice Biennale, “Souls of Venice” proved to be a fitting tribute to the city’s enduring legacy. Quinn’s masterful use of AR breathed new life into the stories of Venice’s historical figures, offering a glimpse into their souls and fostering a deeper appreciation for the city’s cultural tapestry.
