Bothwell’s hauntingly fragile figures in glass and ceramic evoke memory’s whispers and childhood familiarity

Christina Bothwell (previously featured) conjures a hauntingly beautiful realm where delicate glass and ceramic sculptures dwell at the intersection of the uncanny and the ephemeral. Youthful figures — children and animals — are presented with vivid painted florals, nestled in shells or enclosed within cages, their fragile forms accentuated by surreal details like wooden antlers and spindly spider-like legs contributed by her collaborator, Robert Bender. These sculptures feel like fragments of dreams, imbued with both tethered tenderness and eerie resonance.

Her solo exhibition Screen Memories currently unfolds at UrbanGlass’s Robert Lehman Gallery in New York City, and runs through September 12. The show, presented with Heller Gallery, offers an immersive encounter with Bothwell’s latest work — each piece a delicate portal into psychological landscapes where memory and the spirit realm coalesce. The pieces seem to beckon contemplative stillness, inviting each observer to lean into their own recollections and subconscious echoes.

More than mere craftsmanship, Bothwell’s art inhabits a liminal space between the real and the imagined. These dreamlike sculptures bridge fragility and whimsy, touching on childhood, transformation, and the ever-shifting boundary between body and otherworldly presence. In placing fragility at the forefront, both delicate and disquieting, her work cultivates a quiet, lingering reverie that stays with you long after you leave the gallery.
