Bikes of Hanoi: a splendid photography series by Jon Enoch

Bikes of Hanoi is a stunning photo series by Jon Enoch, a British portrait photographer who traveled to Vietnam to document the unique and colorful culture of motorbike delivery drivers in the capital city. The series captures the amazing balance skills and creativity of the drivers, who transport a wide range of goods on their bikes, from car parts and eggs to live fish and flowers. Enoch spent a week in Hanoi, chasing down riders and convincing them to pose for the camera, sometimes paying them a small fee for their time.

The resulting photographs are a vibrant celebration of Hanoi’s street life, as well as a tribute to an age-old art of delivery that might soon disappear. Enoch was inspired to create the series after reading about the new legislation that plans to ban motorbikes from the city by 2030, in order to improve air quality and reduce congestion. He wanted to capture this iconic aspect of Hanoi’s culture before it was gone, and to show the world the diversity and ingenuity of the riders.
