Adam Parker Smith, an innovative artist, has created a thought-provoking series titled “Crush,” where he compresses well-known classical sculptures into small marble cubes. This unique approach challenges viewers’ perceptions of classical art by presenting familiar forms in an unfamiliar format. By using a combination of digital 3D modeling and traditional marble carving techniques, Smith has transformed iconic pieces such as Bernini’s David and the Apollo Belvedere into cubic forms, each occupying a space of one cubic meter.
The process involves a team of master carvers and advanced technology, including a seven-axis reductive robot, to meticulously sculpt the compressed figures from Carrara marble, the same material used by the original artists. Smith’s work invites us to reconsider the classical ideals of beauty and form, presenting these historical masterpieces in a way that is both accessible and refreshingly new.
