Jochum van der Woude recreates Pokémons as amusing Renaissance paintings

Netherlands-based painter Jochum van der Woude, also known as Joccum, has embarked on a delightful artistic journey: reimagining the original 151 Pokémon in the style of Renaissance paintings. His passion for both the timeless pop culture phenomenon of Pokémon and the classical artistry of the Renaissance era shines through in his captivating creations.

The project began serendipitously while Jochum waited for an oil painting of his cat to dry. Inspiration struck, and he found himself giving Pikachu a Renaissance makeover. Soon, he was immersed in transforming each of the original Pokémon into unique, classically inspired figures. His personal connection to Pokémon — from childhood TV episodes to eagerly anticipated Game Boy games — made this endeavor even more meaningful. The result? A fantastic fusion of whimsy, nostalgia, and artistic mastery that bridges the gap between digital creatures and timeless art.

This journey started rather unassumingly — as I was waiting for an oil painting of my cat to dry, inspiration struck. I found myself giving Pikachu a Renaissance makeover, and before I knew it, I was deep into the creation of the original 151 Pokémon, each with a unique classical flair. My connection to Pokémon? It’s a familiar tale. It began with the first TV episode I watched as a kid, continuing with the Game Boy games that I anticipated every birthday. Those digital creatures were an integral part of my upbringing.
