The captivating world of pop surrealism finds a unique voice in the works of German-Portuguese artist Paul Neberra. Neberra’s paintings are portals to dreamlike realities, where elements of classical and surrealist art interweave with pop culture references. Drawing inspiration from his own unconscious mind and the world around him, Neberra curates a visual tapestry that explores the complexities of human existence within the natural world.
Neberra’s artistic influences range from the giants of the Renaissance to the masters of Surrealism, seamlessly blended with the iconic figures of contemporary pop culture. This unique fusion allows Neberra to create a visual language that is both familiar and unsettling. His paintings act as windows into parallel realities, where historical events and cultural touchstones serve as springboards for the exploration of the human psyche.
My work reflects a lot of my unconscious! Especially in the way I see the world and solve my fears and anguish. The images I create emerge as a mediator between my unconscious and my surrounding reality, that is, from a psychoanalytic point of view, a profound interpretation of various aspects of my mind. (…) I can point out that surrealism and lowbrow / Pop Surrealism artists are a great influence, but as far as technique and representation are concerned, I find myself in classicism, realism and the renaissance. The fantasy and influence of Pop culture are just as important as sensitivity to environmental and social issues. I think that many times I try to revive an Era in which nature had a great prominence in people’s lives. As a consequence, a universe emerges which is a kind of symbiosis that relates the human being to his surrounding and nature itself. I feel that the paintings I create serve as parallel reality windows. In these images we have subtle references to past historical events, but in which different realities arise from ours. I’m still searching…
