Murmuration: an installation made of thousands of black birds by Cai Guo-Qiang

Cai Guo-Qiang, an artist celebrated for his grandiose artworks often involving fireworks, has created a breathtaking installation titled “Murmuration (Landscape)”. This piece features 10,000 porcelain birds, each individually smudged black with gunpowder, suspended in a gallery to form a three-dimensional calligraphic representation of Mount Li, the site of the ancient warriors’ tomb.

The installation, part of a large-scale exhibit at Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, offers viewers an awe-inspiring experience that bridges history and contemporary art. The meticulously arranged swarm of porcelain starlings captures the dynamic beauty of a natural murmuration, while also paying homage to Chinese cultural heritage.
