Dive into the sensual world of Hattori Makiko’s coiled porcelain sculptures

The intricate porcelain sculptures crafted by Hattori Makiko are nothing short of mesmerizing! Originally a fine art major, Hattori was drawn to the softness and sensuality of clay, which led her to switch to ceramics. Her early creations featured impressed rose patterns on plaque forms, which evolved into standing vases. But it was during her master’s degree that she truly found her niche, breaking away from traditional vessel forms to focus on extraordinary sculptural creations. These sculptures are characterized by densely packed clay attachments meticulously applied in tens of thousands, resembling delicate, intricate coils that seem almost impossible to create. The dedication and patience Hattori pours into each piece is palpable, knowing they take up to six months to dry and allow her to complete only eight to ten works annually. Using Seto clay and keeping her works unglazed, she allows the raw beauty and complexity of her technique to shine through.

Hattori’s sculptures are a demonstration of her dedication and artistic vision. Each piece boasts a surface entirely covered with tiny bundles of clay shavings, both inside and out, demonstrating an astounding level of precision and patience. The unglazed Seto clay used in her works enhances the texture and intricacy, showcasing the sinuous coils that make her art so distinctive. As Hattori works diligently to perfect each creation, viewers are left in awe of the intricacy and time-intensive nature of her sculptures. With her ability to transform clay into such breathtaking forms, Hattori Makiko continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us that true artistry lies in the details.
