Mark Brooks, an art director and graphic designer, presents “The Creative Specimens”, a series of hybrid creatures that blend the realms of animals, insects, and plants. These otherworldly organisms are depicted in lush vintage-style illustrations, reminiscent of the biological classifications of Charles Darwin and his contemporaries. Brooks’ work is a nod to the past, yet it brings a modern twist to the concept of species classification by creating fantastical beings that challenge our perception of nature’s boundaries.
Each illustration in Brooks’ series is a seamless combination of different species, resulting in unusual hybrids that are both bizarre and beautiful. A bird’s feathered head on a tortoise’s body, octopus tentacles emerging from a cactus, and coral forming the antlers of a deer are just a few examples of his imaginative fusion. These creative specimens invite viewers to explore a world where evolution takes an unexpected turn, and the natural world is reimagined through a lens of artistic wonder. Alademosca Studio from Mallorca, Spain; Peter Cobo and Jorge Artola from HIDE Studio (Madrid, Spain); and Paper Chase Press from Los Angeles for Adobe’s 99U Conference also collaborated with this project.
