Rachael Cassiani’s approach to oil painting is a mesmerizing exploration of the natural landscapes that surround her native Martha’s Vineyard. Her work captures the essence and dynamic beauty inherent to the island’s tranquil beaches, rugged sandy cliffs, and expansive blue skies. Each brushstroke she makes whispers the calming whispers of ocean breezes and rustling leaves, as she translates these elements into vibrant, geometric forms. With a distinctive cubist flair, Cassiani boldly exaggerates and fragments the natural structures she observes, crafting pieces that pulse with the life and energy of the Atlantic seaboard. Her deliberate use of color and form imbues each canvas with a sense of depth and movement, drawing viewers into a kaleidoscopic representation of nature viewed through her imaginative lens.
The brilliance of Cassiani’s technique lies in her ability to blend her creative intuition with the observable world. By methodically deconstructing her environment into its dominant hues and geometric shapes, she creates compositions that are both innovative and familiar. This process allows her to celebrate the unpredictability of nature while maintaining a semblance of order through abstraction. Her paintings present a celebration of earth tones, intertwining with vibrant blues and yellows that echo the natural palette of her surroundings. Through her art, Cassiani offers an invitation to reflect on the often-overlooked details of our environment, encouraging a reimagining of the landscapes we may take for granted. Her body of work underscores the profound connections between art, nature, and the human experience, inspiring viewers to see the world with fresh eyes.
I choose the structure of the paintings by looking at my scene and seeing where the most dominant hues are. I exaggerate the natural colors of the original landscape.
